Internal Coordination and Spatial Awareness: About the Course

Everyone knows academically where up and down is, where forward and back are, where left and right are. This academic understanding, however, does not translate to embodied experience. If you can't move your hand clearly along a vertical or horizontal line or circle, then it suggests that you cannot feel something very fundamental to life: where you are in space, or where you are going. With practice it is possible to clarify this to a deep degree, allowing you to feel lines or planes of motion in space as if they were magnetic currents that can be perceived as clearly as touching an object. Once this embodiment of spatial awareness is released into the interior, you end up with a profound and deeply relaxing sense: you know exactly where you are (all of you), and you know exactly where you're going. This is not based on a mental process of thinking, rather it is a viscerally felt wisdom that when embodied is known as clearly as you know that the sun is bright. This course will bring both the necessary conceptual framework, and the practices required to slowly refine this possibility. They are simple practices, but probably some of the most profound I've ever trained with, and they continue to be the cornerstone of all of my physical training.

Meet Your Instructor: Craig Mallett

After 10+ years of external martial arts practice and dance, I thought I was well coordinated. When I first learnt these simple exercises, however, it became quickly apparent that I had no felt sense of where most of my body was. Being riddled with tension and injury, the visceral sense of spatial awareness had been crowded and muted. Sure I could do some fancy acrobatics, but I could not move my hand along a simple straight line. What I discovered is that our system can be capable of doing incredible physical practices such as acrobatics even when the majority of it is disconnected and hidden from awareness. As I engaged with these simple practices, I discovered a sense of connection to my physicality that no amount of acrobatics could deliver: a sense of not only coordinating my hands and feet, but how this coordination affected my interior, which in turn affected my whole experience of life.  After another 10 years of exploration of this approach, I am now presenting to you this course as a distillation of that exploration. Part external (if you're a bit uncoordinated, it will help A LOT), part internal (if you're well coordinated you will be challenged in new and unique ways), this course is really a fundamental building block for all of my work.
