Decompressing the Center: About the Course
While many people do a quick warm up for the spine, rarely is it given the attention it deserves. Being a critical part of the central nervous system, and the literal backbone of the entire body, having a compressed, tight, warped spine can lead to many issues elsewhere in the system. This comprehensive 8 week course aims to begin reversing it all. Instead of trying to solve these issues one by one with a laser pointer, this program instead invites you to explore the process of decompressing the spine: drawing one end away from the other, gently, until the tension is teased out of it and the spine is freed. Along the way you will learn how to release away from center, back towards it, qualities of floating and sinking, and a number of other processes that are critical for deepening your qigong practice. By soaking awareness more thoroughly through the spine, you will learn to feel and articulate many parts of your body that you might have thought impossible to access.
Meet Your Instructor: Craig Mallett
Having had a serious back injury in my early teens, and wrestling with a lifetime scoliosis, I was always interested in back exercises. Stretching and strengthening exercises had their efficacy, but I did not make serious inroads on my back tension until I began approaching it with the internal cultivation principles I use now: opening and releasing. As I went deeper with these qualities, I found that the spine was at the center of all of my other issues; shoulders, knees, old niggles in the wrist from handstands - all of them stemmed from a compensation needed to bypass the excessive tension in the spine. As I kept pulling on the thread I found more and more layers of gold, and the more I resolved the spinal problems, the more it seemed like all the other issues started to dissolve. This course is the accumulation of a lifetime of investigation, practice and study on this topic - I hope you enjoy it!
