Awakening the Deep Hip (Kua): About the Course

The deep hip, or region known as the Kua in many Chinese internal arts, is the point of connection between the torso and legs, whose center is roughly the space between the ball of the upper leg (femoral head) and the socket of the pelvis (acetabulum). To awaken it is specific task that's reasonably straightforward if you understand the mechanics, but elusive and long if not. If we learn exactly what the Kua is, how to move around it without dragging the knees about, how to let our weight release through the Kua to the center of the feet, and how to encourage region to be opening and releasing, we can find a healthy alignment of the knees, natural organization of the legs and torso, and a connection to the center of the foot. The Kua is directly related to the usage of the glutes, and if the glutes are stagnant, stuck and unable to release or bear load properly, then the Kua will remain unavailable for proper usage. Its availability also has a general impact on our capacity to drop our weight downwards (literally grounding it) and by extension the calmness of our mind, as energy unable to sink through the physical structures tends to get stuck in the mental structures, turning them without end. A free awakened Kua will allow you to drain tension normally held in the torso above into the ground below. This allows a freedom in upper limits of the body, relief of pressure in the back, and a strength of the legs seldom found in even the most athletic western bodies.

For a long time I practiced without paying attention to the Kua, and with naturally tight hips from too much time spent in front of the computer gaming, I ended up paying the price. Knee pain haunted me for a few years, as did lower back pain. It wasn't until I really began to focus on the Kua and uncovering it's function did I start to make any inroads to the problem. The more I learnt to articulate the Kua, the more everything else in my practice began to work as it should have from the start. I continue to use these exercises to this day myself, as they are the gift that keeps on giving. The more deeply I release the Kua, the more carryover continues to overflow into the rest of my training. My knees are better, my back is infinitely improved, and my legs are stronger than most - all done without any modern weightlifting or conventional leg exercises!
